Understanding Workplace Stress

Why Stress Feels Different for Everyone

Two people can face the same deadline, difficult conversation or demanding week and experience it very differently. One may feel focused by the pressure; another may feel overwhelmed.

That’s because stress isn’t determined by the situation alone. Our response is also influenced by how our brain interprets what’s happening, shaped by previous experiences, learned patterns, perceived control and everything else competing for our attention.

Stress Isn’t Always the Problem

Stress is a normal physiological response to pressure. In manageable amounts, it can help us focus, respond and perform. The problem is prolonged stress without adequate recovery.

Stress isn’t always caused by one significant event. Often, it’s cumulative:

  • Back-to-back meetings
  • Constant emails and notifications
  • Changing priorities
  • Difficult conversations
  • Tight deadlines
  • Working through breaks
  • Pressure outside work

Individually, these may feel manageable. Together, they can gradually fill our stress bucket until something relatively small causes it to overflow.

Recognising Stress Earlier

The body often notices stress before the conscious mind does. Early signs might include:

  • Tight jaw, neck or shoulders
  • Headaches or digestive changes
  • Poor sleep or fatigue
  • Irritability or restlessness
  • Difficulty concentrating

Recognising these signals earlier gives us more opportunity to respond rather than react.

For organisations, supporting stress doesn’t mean removing every challenge from working life. It means helping people better understand their own patterns, recognise when pressure is building and develop practical ways to recover.

Turn Understanding Into Action

When employees understand how stress works and learn to recognise their own patterns earlier, they’re better equipped to respond before pressure becomes overwhelming.
